Configure Outlook Express (POP3)

1

Starting Outlook Express

If your WebMail on Register.it works properly, then the problem lies in the configuration of your email program. In this case, you should go through the configuration of your email mailbox again. Follow the steps in this section.

IMPORTANT: The email you received after purchasing your domain at Register.it or completed a transfer contains all the necessary information you need to enter your control panel. If you lost the email, did not receive it or received it with incomplete information, please follow the instructions found in the "If you did not receive your access codes to Register.it's control panel" section.

From the control panel, you can get all the necessary information needed for the configuration of your email mailbox:

Domain name: yourdomain.it

Email address: info@yourdomain.com

  • User name or account name or User ID: info@yourdomain.com
  • Password: same (the same one you have been using previously)
  • Pop3: pop.yourdomain.it (or you can also use: mail.register.it or )
  • SMTP: this depends on your Internet provider, often it is: mail.yourISPprovider.com (if your provider is DADA, then it would be: mail.dada.it)

To configure your email program correctly, follow this easy procedure:

2

Configure

1) Open Outlook Express and select "Tools" from the main menu

2) From this "Tools" menu, click on "Accounts."

3) In the next screen, click on the "Add" button

4) Click on the pop-up menu voice "Mail...".

5) In the next screen, indicate the name you want to appear as the sender.

6) Click on the "Next" button.

3

Configure

7) In the following screen, enter the email address you want to check (in our initial example, it is info@pippo.com)

8) Click on the "Next" button.

9) In the following screen, enter as the "Incoming email server (POP3)": pop.DOMAINNAME.DOMAIN EXTENSION.
In our example, the POP3 for the email info@pippo.com will be pop.pippo.com. If you are not sure, you can enter: pop.register.it.

10) Enter the outgoing mail server (SMTP) and click on the "Next" button. You must indicate the SMTP server of your internet service provider (if for example your ISP is DADA, the the SMTP would be: mail.dada.it). If you do not know this paramenter, you need to contact your internet service provider.

11) In this screen, you must enter the user name or account. The account name is easy to remember because it is the same as the email address you want to download. In our example, the account would be: info@pippo.it
IMPORTANT: the account is the whole email address, not just the part in front of the "@" (therefore, the account is info@pippo.com and NOT just info). This is the most common error in configuration.

12) The password is the same one you have used up to now. If you have lost or cannot remember your password, you can find it within your Register.it control panel, check the instructions found in the "If you did not receive your access codes to Register.it's control panel" section.

13) Once you have entered all this information, save the information by clicking twice on the "Finish" button.

Special settings

In the menu bar of your email program you have a series of useful settings to send and receive your mail. In general, it is sufficient to leave the default settings of your email program for everything to work. These particular settings, however, allow several operations on your email mailbox. Let's take a look at the most important ones.

Keep a copy of messages on the server

From the menu, select the following: Tools – Accounts – Mail, then select the email address and then “Properties” - then the ADVANCED properties tab.

Having this particular setting activated allows you to "download" your email messages from the POP3 server to your computer, while leaving a copy of the mail on the server. Generally, you want to make use of this setting when you want to view your mail from several computers, for example, at the office and at home.

You need to pay attention to this setting, because, if at least one mailbox has this setting on, then you can encounter the following problems:
- progressive slow down in downloading mail;
- duplicate copies of messages on your computer; leaving a copy of messages on the server means that the next time you check email, those messages will once again be downloaded as well as all new messages. This is what increases the time needed to check for new messages.

Special settings

Server Timeouts

From the menu, select the following: Tools – Accounts – Mail, then select the email address and then “Properties” - then the ADVANCED properties tab.

The “Server Timeouts” is the time your email program waits to receive signals from the POP3 server. Beyond this time (generally set to 1 minute), the email program will generate a timeout error message and will not continue downloading messages. When connections are slow or servers are temporarily slow, it can be useful to increase the time required for downloading messages.

Special settings

Check mail every (X minutes)

From the menu, select the following: Tools – Options, then GENERAL tab.

This allows you to set the time interval for your email program to automatically check mail (both send and receive mail) from the server. Remember, if you have a Dial-up connection, each check mail operation results in a connection to your ISP server. In this case, it is useful to combine with this setting the type of connection to use "If your computer is not connected".

If your computer is not connected:

If this control is not selected, each time your email program wants to check email it will automatically connect to the Internet using the type of connection you select. This is not a problem if you connect using a Power Dial-Up, ADSL or local network connection.
